Shutter Speed Project 2

I remember there was a fountain in front of a shopping mall, I can't really recall it so I drove to most shopping mall to search it in the morning. Well, this sounds stupid because there are waterfall and fountain everywhere, even KLCC park has one. But, the one I am looking for is a smaller fountain, and it doesn't not "dance" like the one in KLCC park.

It just another shutter speed project. Hope you like them. Lets see shutter speed 1/2000 sec.

As I always say, fast shutter speed will make the photo darker than actual scene because the light your camera capture is lesser and you will find details missing, in some case.

This photo is captured in shutter speed 1/1000 sec. As you can see, the photo is slightly brighter and yes, more details and you can see the fountain was freeze in the air.

Actually, I think 1/500 sec is enough to freeze and the result is better, in this scene. Of course, the weather is one of the factor, I was shooting under the rain, again! I wonder why whenever I shoot outdoor photo, it rain. :P

I just realise one thing, I like to say "see, this photo looks like those from a compact camera". No offence, hehe. Well, you can freeze motion by compact camera, if you know how to do it or in a correct way. But, in most AI mode or Auto mode of compact camera, you will get something like this. :)

For 1 sec shutter speed, the fountain become smooth and soft. If you compare this photo with 1/500 sec shutter speed, you will see the different especially brightness and details of the photo. Of course, due to the slow shutter speed, the people at the background are blurred.

This photo was shot in 2 sec shutter speed, the result is almost the same as 1 sec shutter speed.

I do not recommend you use shutter speed slower than 2 sec because the photo will overexpose, unless the environment really dark and everything are moving very slow. By the way, as I remember, there was a blue t-shirt man walk across between the fountain and my camera while the shutter speed still remain open. But, the image ( or shadow) did not capture by the camera. But, as you can see, the people behind the fountain were captured and yes, blurred.Where is the blue t-shirt man? Why he did not capture by my camera?

Shutter Speed Project

Hi there, today is another good day to shoot some outdoor photos, I guess. :)

We had discussed different theories and shoot with different Mode, but all these lessons and tutorials are just not enough for me. Hehe. I need more, not only my brain needs to remember all these lessons, I guess my hands need to remember either. :) Of course, practise makes perfect.

I just realised I like to play with Shutter Speed instead of Aperture. Although the basic of photography must work with both Shutter Speed and Aperture, I like to freeze the motion, to capture the beauty of instance. Sounds like a phrase directly translate from a Chinese phrase. ^^

Ok, I just grabbed my camera and drive to a place, a clean and quite place. There is a lake, I traced the water source and I found this.

This photo shoot in 1/100 Shutter Speed, you can get this result in a normal compact camera, or in Auto Mode. Well, the water is blur, and it just like you see with your eyes.

As I said, I really like to play with Shutter Speed. Freezing the motion of the water or fire just make me love photography more. :)

With 1/2000 Shutter Speed, you can see the water sharper and clearer. But the photo will be darker due to underexposure. Compare with 1/100 Shutter Speed, you can the drop and shape of the water now :)

By the way, shooting with a slower Shutter Speed is another way to make me love photography either. :P

As you can see, the water looks soft and smooth. Unlike the result in 1/100 Shutter Speed, you can see the beauty of the "blur" result. :P I also tried to shoot with a slower Shutter Speed but I got overexposure because the environment is not dark enough. Too bad, it started to rain and 3 hours to sunset. I got another appointment. Maybe, next time. :)

How to Use Sports Mode?

First, you need to select the Sports Mode at the camera Mode Dial. You might found your Dial looks different, but I'm sure you can find the Athlete icon ( In red circle) at the Dial :)

So, what does Sports Mode do? Let's begin. These are the setting for my camera, but it will be about the same as yours as well. Do not worry ^^

Aperture = Auto
Shutter Speed = Auto
Exposure = Not Available
ISO Speed = Auto
Picture Style = Standard
White Balance = Auto
AF Mode = AI Servo
AF Point Selection = Auto
Drive Mode = High-Speed Continuous
Metering Mode = Evaluative
Built-in Flash = OFF

Sports Mode combines AI Servo and High-Speed Continuous Shutter Speed to freeze the motion of a moving object. With the High-Speed Continuous Shutter Speed, you will able to capture continuous motion so you will not miss any important scenes of a moving object, as well as shooting kids and animals.

Well, if you want to freeze motion, why don't you just increase the shutter speed? Please refer back to "How to Freeze Motion?" .

There are differences between "Increase Shutter Speed to Freeze Motion" and Sports Mode. As you can see,  Portrait Mode, Landscape Mode, Close-Up Mode, Sports Mode and Night Portrait Mode are actually function in Auto Mode (with some changes respectively).  There are Intelligent Software to help the user to capture a better picture.

In Sports Mode, there is a setting ( In red colour of setting list ) called "AI Servo", which is a function automatically focus the moving objects in order to capture continuous motion. The Focus changes to keep the moving target focused when you press the shutter button halfway.

And it is fast enough to make continuous focusing compare with AI Focus in Auto Mode.

Can't see the different? Let's zoom in to the tyre.

As you can see, AI Servo able to focus both rim and ground are sharp and clear, even the vehicle is moving.

This picture shows the rim is blurred but the ground is clear. Although AI Focus in Auto Mode is design for moving object, but not as fast as Sports Mode, the way to Focus is different as well.

Unlike a simple "Freeze Motion", you only focus at one point, hold your breath and wait the moving target moved into your focused point. Once the target away from your focused point, you need to search the focus again or you will not get a clear picture.
